Oporto (Porto) airport is by far the closest to Braga. The A3 motorway linking Porto to Spain passes nearby Braga (you can estimate distances by combining maps 1 and 2). There are direct flights to this airport from most European main cities.
You can reach Braga from Porto airport as follows
(but see a
suggestion below about taking a taxi at the
airport direct to Braga in order to save time):
Aerobus from Oporto Airport to the city center
Take the bus (aerobus) from the airport to Porto city center (Av. Aliados/P.Liberdade). There is one every 30min (2.6 EURO). Alternatively, take a taxi (20 EURO).
Express bus/train from Oporto to Braga
Once in the Oporto city center, you may take an express bus to Braga ar take a train:
Taxi or Rent-a-car
By taking a taxi or renting a car (see below a list of companies operating in the airport) you will reach Braga on the A3 (see map on the right) in about 30 minutes. From the airport, take the direction of Porto (see the map on the right) and then follow the blue information signs indicating A3/Braga or A3/Valença. Once on the A3 just keep going until you reach the Braga Sul exit, leave the motorway and turn right. Please note that you will have to pay a motorway toll. The taxi fare should be range between 40.00 and 48.00 EURO.
The following rent-a-car companies operate from the airport: AVIS (Tel.: +351 229 449 525), EUROPCAR (Tel.: 229 482 525), HERTZ (Tel.: +351 229 437 690), SIXT (Tel.: +351 229 440 797). AUTO JARDIM (Tel.: +351 229 413 661), AURO RENT (Tel.: +351 229 440 111 / 229 415 939), AA CASTANHEIRA BUDGET (Tel.: +351 219 942 402), GARA (Tel.: +351 229 415 939) (Further information also available from www.portugal-web.com.)
Suggestion concerning traveling
| In this event, please send your flight details to paula@di.uminho.pt (as in the table above). Please also indicate whether you want a receipt or not. |
Knowing the flight times well in advance is essential for an arrangement with the taxi company.
| If you are interested in staying here please send an e-mail to Paula Anjo (paula@di.uminho.pt) in order to book your accommodation. |
Braga is the largest town in the picturesque province of Minho, 60 km north of Porto and 40km away from the Atlantic coast. It is a town dating from the Roman occupation (Bracara Augusta, capital of the Roman province of Galecia, founded by the Emperor August, between the 3rd year BC and the 4th AC) which became very influential as a religious center since the middle ages. It reached its climax in the 18th-century, when it became one of the most important centers for baroque art in the country. The historical relevance of this town (click here for many more details) is patent in its District Archives, the second most important in the country after the Torre do Tombo archives in Lisbon.
Today, Braga is a town of contrasts and contradictions. The traditional Holy Week ceremonies are still in use, but the old religion colleges (already involving about two thousand students in the 16th-century) have given place to the technological faculties of the University. Full of construction sites and cranes, of graduate students, bars and pubs, it has provided job opportunities which have settled such a growing young population. However, the town as a whole is growing too fast and in an uncontrolled way.

including places to visit,
restaurants,
places to stay etc
please follow the following links (among others easy to search on the web):
Other towns of touristic interest in the Minho province are
Guimarães, Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima- see maps 1 and 2.
And - of course - the Peneda-Gerês
National Park.
